The boiler

A boiler is little more than a hot water heater. The general idea is that water is put into the boiler and the boiler is plumbed to the heat exchanger. The Grundfos pump is the heart of this arrangement. When the thermostat tells it to; the Grundfos pumps boiling water from the water boiler into the heat exchanger where it heats pond water coming through the exchanger.

Boilers are available at your local boxlot building supply, such as Home Depot and Lowes'. The usual boiler is a household unit and generates a modest BTU rating (30,000 btu or thereabouts). These boilers cost about $150-200 and are sufficient for most small ponds. For larger ponds, for example, up to six thousand gallons, you need the double strength. Just walk into the boxlot building supply and say
"I need the most powerful BTU boiler you have". What they will show you is a boiler with twice the thermal output of the regular residential (50,000-75,000 btu) and it should run about $300-350.

Even better than this boiler, you can get a 50,000 btu OUTDOOR or ALL WEATHER boiler for use outside (pictured), they use these a lot for hot tubs and such where the boiler sets under the deck, and heats up a Jacuzzi. You have to know what to ask for. The above boiler runs on Propane or natural gas and costs $400-450 and it will handle cold winters and drive the largest exchanger.

What if you live in Canada?
Okay folks. I have been there, and certain times of the year it gets so cold that your pee freezes solid before it even hits the ground. Canadians wish I was kidding. Actually I am, but it is cold. REAL cold. So you Canadians should consider buying the largest exchanger and a commercial boiler. Those commercial boilers are very, very expensive. So, my friend Bob Bongiorno had a great idea that they use in Long Island, where apparently the ponds are large and the winters are cold. Run TWO boilers of modest power and modest price - run both of these into one Grundfos and then into your exchanger.

The boiler I use, and also recommend is:

Why is the top of the boiler pictured about blackened?
Because it caught on fire. I had turned off the boiler for the summer. A bunch of wasps built a big nest in the main flue. When I turned it on this Fall it burned a twelve pound hive and the stuff burned the bottom and top of the unit up, causing it to shut off. Well, I took out the flue baffle and put my lawn blower in there and blew the cremains of the wasps nest all out of there. I removed the burner element and shook all the rust out of it, and reinstalled it. The unit fired right up and works better than last year. It turns out that the center flue baffle can shift in transport. If it's NOT EXACTLY square, the unit burns inefficiently, raising the operation costs very dramatically.

+ Why use a multi-segment heating system?

If any one component of your system were to fail, the component which has failed can be replaced within 24 hours. In 24 hours, your pond's water temperature won't fall more than 20o F. If you employ a pool heater, you will be very pleased with it's performance. You will not be pleased with your "downtime" if any part of the pool heater were to fail.

A basic heating system is composed of the following parts:

  • 1. Water boiler
  • 2. Grundfos or Teco whole house water circulator
  • 3. Thermostat to turn the Grundfos on or off.
  • 4. Heat exchanger
  • 5. Pump to transfer water from pond to exchanger and back again.

We can supply you with the lowest price on the best quality pumps and exchangers.
