Did something we said not make sense? What the heck is "stripping the beads"? Here's the answers.

Head.
That would be the black thing on top of the column. The center part of the filter, the piece that slides down into the big "body" of the filter is made up of an upper "head" and a lower, white "column". The head has the controller which consists of Filter, Backwash, Rinse, Closed and Bypass or Recirculate.

Column - That would be the white cylindrical part which extends into the filter from the controller head.

Controller - The lever or knob on top of the center column rotates through five different settings. The head or controller is the black lever and control set on top of the column.

"CF" - Cubic feet - When a filter holds 2.2 cubic feet of beads, this means that if packed in square boxes, there would be 2.2 boxes of beads, which are twelve inches by twelve inches by twelve inches in size.

Bio Film - Thin layer of slime which contains all the beneficial nitrogen reducing bacteria on the beads.

Stripping the Beads - If you over-backwash your beads, meaning; you backwash too frequently and too thoroughly, you will remove the thin biofilm of bacteria and slime in which those bacteria live. You can also remove the biofilm of the beads chemically, for example; if you add salt to your system and dissolve it all in the skimmer basket, you'll find that the bio film on the beads is completely removed, leaving the beads sparkling white again.

Performance Curve - When you put presssure on a pumps output of water, or you stack a LOT of plumbing on the pump, this is called "head pressure". It's the amount of resistance the pump has to overcome to return water to the pond. This resistance can be caused by height of plumbing, because it has to fight gravity and the weight of the water. Resistance can also be caused by LENGTH of plumbing because the elbows and sides of the pipe causes friction and resistance. So between the length and heighth you have to move and lift water, you have your "head pressure". The performance curve shows you how the pump performs under increasing "head pressure" so you can see whether the pump will EVEN be able to drive your water feature.
